Many of you have asked me how to clean various goods like shoes, boots, purses, shoes with lifts, etc. There is no one answer that is going to be right for every case. However, I have come up with some general do’s and don’ts that I recommend based on my last 16 years of cleaning goods.
First, the don’ts...
Don’t
... use a machine like a washing machine or dryer
... use heat like hot water or a heat gun
... use just any kind of cleaning agent as it should be chosen based on what material you are cleaning and what you are trying to remove from that material
... partially or spot clean anything
... use just any kind of cleaning tool; again, the right gadget to use depends on what material you are cleaning and what you are trying to remove from that material
Now, the do’s ...
... identify the material you are cleaning correctly
... try to identify what you are trying to remove
... use cold or cool temperatures
... consider dry cleaning techniques, no liquids
... clean the entire item
... if you are cleaning something that comes as a pair like boots or shoes, what you do to one of the items in the pair you must also do to its mate in the pair
